Project Description

The Master of Arts in Education major in Social Studies Education is an advanced academic and professional outcomes-based program designed to offer Social Studies practitioners with deep understanding and critical thinking in theoretical, social, political, and economic foundation of Social Studies education. It is the aim of this program to inculcate the importance of social studies and that their effective delivery of instruction will produce well educated and informed citizens in a culturally diverse and interdependent world. It is also the thrust of this program to promote cooperation among others by applying the modern innovative teaching techniques and approaches that will contribute in the improvement of social studies instruction in the country.

Vision

The Master of Arts in Education major in Social Studies Education envisions to produce active, responsible, and morally upright Social Studies teachers/researchers knowledgeable in the diverse democratic dimensions of education and expert participants in policy, regulatory, and social discourses related to social studies education.

Goals

The Master of Arts in Education major in Social Studies Education aims to develop professionals able to conduct scientific research and apply the skills in planning, designing, implementation, and evaluation of policies and reforms governing Social Studies education. The program likewise endeavors to drive educators to sound and meaningful innovations in Social Studies.

Program Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Master of Arts in Education major Social Studies, graduates are expected to show:
  • expertise in research-oriented assessment and evaluation of current educational practices and intelligently integrate the advanced knowledge in theories, policies, and principles concerning Social Studies.
  • competence in executing upgraded pedagogical skills capable of undertaking scientific inquiry and independent research for the advancement of knowledge in Social Studies education and allied discipline.
  • proficiency in designing and developing theoretically grounded and research-based curricula and instructional materials for social studies program.
  • professional and value-oriented leadership skills imbued with a research-based theoretical and disciplinary foundation of social studies education.
  • research capabilities in replicating, verifying, validating, contextualizing, and applying theoretical and practical knowledge in dealing with concerns and developments in Social Studies education.
  • expertise in generating knowledge cognizant to teaching, learning, and community service attuned to Social Studies relative to independent research projects and activities.

Program Requirements

Applicants for admission to the Master of Arts in Education

  • must be a holder of bachelor’s degree in the teacher education field from any recognized institution.
  • who do not hold a bachelor’s degree in the teacher education program, but still wish to pursue a Master of Arts in Education must earn courses (9 units) relevant to the field in his/her undergraduate program, or may take 9 units in the College of Education while taking the graduate courses.
  • must earn the 18 units of professional courses in the discipline before admission to the graduate program.
  • must have earlier experience in teaching (practice teaching).
